My Journey Back to Healthy
Sometimes the realization just comes – and for others it takes a crisis!
I wanted my life back!
After a long recovery from a debilitating illness, I knew things needed to change. I was “healed” from the illness, but still not well!
I was so over it – loss of energy, not sleeping well, being uncomfortable in my clothes, chronic discomfort, and poor food choices.
My diet sucked. I needed sleeping pills because of all the meds I had been on. I still couldn’t do many of the things I used to do. The muffin top just had to go. I had no energy. Coffee got me going in the morning and I needed a nap in the afternoon.
Mostly, I was tired of being tired all the time!
I wanted to feel like I used to – I wanted to feel young still, vibrant, active, and healthy.
I was sick and tired of being sick and tired.
I finally figured it out!
THAT WAS ME A FEW YEARS BACK!
FAST FORWARD TO
NOVEMBER 2, 2017!
On that fateful morning, I met my physical fitness trainer at the usual 6:30 a.m. time, but that morning my world was about to be rocked…hard!
While doing a warm up exercised I’d been doing regularly, the tread of my shoe for some unknown reason stuck to the indoor/outdoor carpet and I was propelled sideways and landed directly on my hip.
Fast forward to ER just before going into surgery for a hip replacement:
Surgeon: Your bones look really good…this is a fluke accident and your fracture is not due to weak bones. Someone 30 years younger would have incurred the same fracture if they’d hit their hip they way you did.
Me: Whew! I was worried. I’ve worked hard to be fit and healthy and have especially tried to pay attention to my bone health.
Surgeon (and every doctor I met with afterwards): The good news is you’ve taken such good care of your health and are in such good shape you’ll recover quickly and likely faster than average, even people even 20-30 years younger.
THAT WAS A RELIEF TO HEAR!
I also wasn’t prepared for the pulmonary embolism that nearly took my life nor two bouts of pleurisy that followed. Thank goodness for good doctors and for a body strong enough to overcome these unexpected set backs.
I’m now (at the beginning of February 2018) three months out and making great progress on my recovery, regaining strength, rebuilding muscle, and back on track for yoga and my other favorite activities….I’m not running again yet, but know I will.
Life dealt me a card I didn’t think was in the deck. I’m grateful I took charge of my health way back when as it prepped me for the hard stuff.
