The road to a healthier lifestyle is like the road to success. It’s a journey not a destination. At each milestone along the way, new goals may be desired or even required to attain the next level of optimum health.
Each person’s journey is unique. This is my journey:
Except for the usual childhood illnesses, like chicken pox, measles, mumps, colds, tonsillitis, and the flu, along with a couple of sprains or bone fractures, I grew up pretty healthy. It wasn’t until after my first baby, that I got into the yo-yo dieting club. Like most women, I’ve battled the bulge and the disappointment of clothes that no longer fit jumping from one diet to another, at times being 30+ pounds too heavy, trying to get back down to my ideal weight and fit back into my skinny jeans . I’ve dealt insomnia, being tired a lot, and was addicted to sugar and coffee.
It wasn’t until 2002, when I was diagnosed with a debilitating disease that my health and my world was rocked.
The physical pain, along with the emotional pain of disability, was often overwhelming and unbearable. It was a challenge being so dependent on others and upon prescription drugs to function. After three years of seeing many doctors and therapists, getting different therapeutic modalities, and being on very addictive drugs, my recovery hit a plateau. The next-step on my treatment plan was beyond my psychological comfort level and just not acceptable to me. I was told I wouldn’t get any better than I was and there was nothing more that could be done. I had made good progress and felt differently. I knew I didn’t want to “live” this way. So I said no. Instead, I trusted my own intuition.
It was then that I took charge of my health.
Fast forward a couple of years. Even though I regained my strength, had overcome my disability, and no longer needed prescriptive or over the counter pain medications, I wasn’t myself. I remained fatigued, felt older than I wanted to feel, and was once again carrying excess body fat. I didn’t know what to do…I was tired of being tired! “It’s natural to carry an extra 10-20 pounds once you’re your age,” I was told. One doctor suggested I go on antidepressants to deal with the fatigue! My confidence in doctors and the health care system was shattered. Although my health care practitioners were giving up on me, I wasn’t!
Once again I took charge of my health and soon my energy was back. I felt good all the time, slept better and I was at my ideal weight and size! I felt younger and more vivacious than I had in years.
People kept asking me what happened and asked if I could help them. I developed an insatiable desire to learn more about nutrition, holistic health and wellness. I enrolled at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where I studied more than one hundred dietary theories, as well as a variety of practical lifestyle coaching methods.Adding in my Ayurveda certification and detox specialist studies has enhanced my personal health, the health of my family, and my experience, knowledge, and skills as a holistic health coach.
Drawing on my years of experience and studies, I will help you take charge of your health by creating a personalized “roadmap to health” that suits your unique body, lifestyle, preferences, and goals.
