Sugar! How sweet it is…but is it a sweet you want?
The scientific name for table sugar is Sucrose, which is a disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose. The body uses sucrose as fuel for energy, just like it uses other more complex carbohydrates. During digestion, the body breaks down carbohydrates, fiber and sucrose into glucose and when it enters the bloodstream it is then taken into the cells where it is converted into energy. So sucrose in itself isn’t a bad thing…but bad things happen when there’s too much of it.
Table sugar, that sweet stuff we add to coffee, lemonade, cereal, baked goods, etc., is extracted from either sugar cane or beets and then refined. During the refining process, it is stripped of its vitamins, minerals and fiber. As a consequence, it actually requires extra effort from the body to digest and assimilate – the body must deplete its own store of minerals and enzymes to absorb sucrose properly. The result? Instead of providing the body with nutrition, refined sugar creates deficiencies.
We may not feel the immediate consequences of sugar, other than a spike in quick energy or for some a headache, but the consumption of sugar creates a lot of negative health impacts: it can suppress the immune system, weaken eyesight, cause hypoglycemia, cause weight gain, exacerbate arthritis, contribute to the development of osteoporosis, increase cholesterol, lead to prostate and ovarian cancer, contribute to development of diabetes, speed up skin aging, increase fluid retention, cause poor concentration, and lead to mood swings and depression. Multiple studies indicate a connection between sugar and ADD and ADHD, in both adults and children.
If sugar causes us so much trouble, why are we still hooked? The reason is, sugar is an addictive substance. Truly! It is important to realize that sugar is an addictive substance – just like caffeine, just like alcohol, and just like other substances like cocaine. According to a recent study cited by Dr. Mercola, new research proves that refund sugar is far more addictive than cocaine – “one of the most addictive and harmful substances currently known.” In the study, 95 percent of rats who were allowed to choose between sugar water and cocaine, went for the sugar. Furthermore, even the poor little rats already addicted to cocaine quickly switched their preference for sugar after it was offered to them as a choice….and, rats were far more willing to have to work for sugar than cocaine.
And then there’s candida! Candida lives on sugar, so once you have this yeast growth started, you’ll crave sugar because the candida demands it!
Once you make the connection between sugar and addiction, you can stop beating yourself up because you eat so much of it. You won’t blame yourself for being “weak” and giving up when you try to “quit” and fall off the wagon. You’ll know that it’s not just about willpower – your cravings have a physical cause. The great news is, like other addictions, it can be broken. Like addictions to caffeine, smoking, alcohol and other substance abuse, the first step is acknowledging the addiction. The next step is taking action.
